The algorithm is just not that into me
Some of my favorite people—dear friends, incredible authors, and readers who’ve changed my life—I met on Instagram. This platform has brought me community, conversations, and connections I never expected. And I’m grateful for it.
But if I’m honest? Only about 10 people interact with my posts there. And that’s not about you—that’s about the algorithm deciding who sees what. (And very likely, that algorithm is driven by dollars I don’t want to spend.)
Today, I had a realization that hit me hard. One of my earliest and most fervent supporters—someone who showed up for me, shared my work, and was part of my community from the beginning—hasn’t popped up in my feed in months. That must mean she’s not seeing my posts either, right?
And if I have to actively search for someone who used to be a core part of my community, then how many of you are quietly drifting away—not because you want to, but because an algorithm has decided we shouldn’t see each other?
I don’t want to lose touch with the people who have supported me, challenged me, and made this space so meaningful.
And that’s why I’m shifting my focus.
This is where we build a new space.
I’m not leaving Instagram, but I’m prioritizing the places where we can actually talk—where posts don’t disappear after 24 hours, where engagement isn’t based on trends, and where we can have real conversations that matter.
That means more conversations right here, on this blog.
That means more connection on Bluesky.
That means growing an email list that isn’t at the mercy of an algorithm.
What’s happening here on the blog?
If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you’re already familiar with what I love to talk about—inclusive love stories, second chances, and faith journeys that don’t fit inside neat little boxes. That’s not going anywhere. But here’s how things are going to evolve:
Deeper Bookish Conversations – More behind-the-scenes about my books, early looks at my WIPs, and thoughts on storytelling that you won’t find on IG.
Queer & Spiritual Discussions – Exploring the intersection of faith, queerness, and the narratives we’ve inherited. The conversations that matter most don’t fit into a caption.
Community Spotlights & Reader Input – My newsletter and this blog will be where I talk with you, not at you—through comments, emails, and conversations that actually stick.
If you’ve ever felt too queer for church, too spiritual for the LGBTQ+ community, or like you didn’t fit neatly into any box—this is where we get to build something different.
FAQ: What This Means for You
Are you deleting your Instagram?
No! I’ll still post there, but I’m not relying on it to be my main way of connecting anymore.
Will I miss anything if I don’t follow you on Bluesky?
Not at all—this blog and my email list will always get the best stuff first. If you want to follow me there for extra discussion, I’d love that, but you won’t be left out.
Will you still engage on IG?
Yes! If you comment, DM, or tag me, I’ll see it and respond. But if you want real-time updates, deep conversations, and first access to my upcoming projects, this blog and my email list are where you need to be.
Stay connected—on your terms!
I don’t want to lose touch with you. If you’re here, it’s because something in my work speaks to you. And that means I want you to be part of this next chapter.
