QOTW: William Faulkner

Well said.

“Read, read, read. Read everything —trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You’ll absorb it. Then write. If it’s good, you’ll find out. If it’s not, throw it out of the window.”

William Faulkner

Quote of the Week

I have a long and complicated history with William Faulkner. One would think that I, a self-proclaimed Southerner and lover of the Tanakh, would adore Faulkner. Alack and alas, his work is a taste I never acquired.

How do I know I don’t enjoy his work? Because I’ve read so very much of it: The Sound and the Fury, As I Lay Dying, A Rose for Emily, A Light in August, and Absalom, Absalom. I can appreciate these brilliant works. But like them? Notsomuch.

That said, I think this is brilliant advice. “Read, read, read. Read everything…” Even Faulkner.

What’s your favorite William Faulkner story?
