What I don’t know about Ralph Waldo Emerson could fill a book. But here are some things I learned just today.
His friends called him Waldo. I love a good goes-by-their-middle name.
He was an abolitionist who believed that the democratic process was the route America should take in that direction.
Which made me wonder if he was a pacifist — and the answer is, “It’s complicated.” He was a philosopher so he had a whole lecture on the topic of war. In a nutshell, we ain’t done with war yet. Sadly.
Because he was verbose, most of what we know about him has been boiled down to one-liners. Like this quote of the week. Perhaps I should put Self-Reliance on my to-be-read list.
